Why prices differ so much
- Everyday brands such as Me-O, Whiskas and Catpro are complete foods at an affordable price and are what most Sri Lankan cat owners feed.
- Premium brands such as Reflex, Brit, Josi and Purina Pro Plan typically use more animal protein and are made in Europe or by large international makers.
- Breed and veterinary diets such as Royal Canin Persian or Urinary cost the most because they are made for specific breeds or health problems.
- Wet food (pouches and cans) costs more per kilo than dry food because it is around 75–80% water — but that water is good for cats that drink little.
How to save on cat food
- Compare price per kilo, not price per bag. A larger bag usually works out much cheaper per kilo.
- Only buy what your cat will finish fresh. An opened bag keeps best for about 4–6 weeks in an airtight container — Sri Lanka’s humidity makes kibble go stale quickly.
- Try a small pack first. Cats can be fussy; buy a trial size before committing to a big bag.
- Mix wet and dry. Feeding mostly dry food with one wet meal a day keeps costs down while adding moisture.
Which cat food should I buy?
- Kittens (up to about 12 months): always a kitten food — see kitten and dry cat food.
- Adult cats: any complete adult food your cat enjoys. Neutered or indoor cats do well on a “sterilised” or “indoor” recipe.
- Persian and other flat-faced cats: breed foods with a kibble shape that is easier for them to pick up.
- Cats with a health problem (urinary, kidney, digestive): ask your vet about a veterinary diet.
