Choosing a cat litter comes down to three things: how easy it is to keep clean, how well it controls smell, and whether your cat is happy to use it. Here is how the main types compare, with current prices.
Types of cat litter
- Clumping (bentonite clay) litter: forms firm clumps you scoop out, so the rest stays clean. Easy daily cleaning and good value — the most popular choice.
- Tofu and plant-based litter: made from plant fibres, lighter to carry and low in dust. Small amounts can often be flushed — check the pack.
- Silica crystal litter: very absorbent with strong odour control; you stir it and replace it fully every few weeks.
- Non-clumping and zeolite litter: absorbs liquid but must be changed completely more often.
How much litter do I need?
Fill the tray to about 5cm deep. With clumping litter, scoop once or twice a day and top up; most single-cat homes use roughly one 5kg bag every 3–4 weeks. A good rule is one more tray than the number of cats (two trays for one cat, three for two cats).

Tips for a fresh, happy litter tray
- Keep the tray in a quiet, easy-to-reach spot — away from food and water bowls.
- Many cats dislike strongly scented litter; unscented is the safest choice.
- A covered litter box keeps litter from being kicked out and gives shy cats privacy.
- Change litter types gradually by mixing the new litter into the old over a week.
- Pregnant women should wear gloves or ask someone else to clean the tray, as cat faeces can carry toxoplasmosis.

Can I use sand instead of cat litter?
Garden sand does not clump or control odour, gets tracked through the house and can carry parasites. A proper cat litter is more hygienic and easier to keep clean.
Why is my cat not using the litter box?
