Kitten Food in Sri Lanka: What, When and How Much to Feed

Kittens grow incredibly fast, especially in their first six months, so they need more protein and energy per kilo than adult cats. Here is how to feed a kitten at every stage, from newborn to one year.

Newborn to 4 weeks: milk only

Kittens should drink only their mother’s milk. If a kitten is orphaned or the mother cannot feed, use a kitten milk replacer such as Royal Canin Babycat Milk, fed with a small bottle every few hours. Never give cow’s milk — most cats cannot digest lactose and it causes diarrhoea, which is dangerous for tiny kittens. Ask a vet for help with very young orphans.

4–8 weeks: weaning

Offer a soft weaning food such as Royal Canin Mother & Babycat mousse, or kitten kibble soaked in warm water, in a shallow dish several times a day. Kittens usually eat mostly solid food by 7–8 weeks.

2–12 months: kitten food

Feed a complete kitten food until about 12 months (large breeds such as Maine Coons grow for longer — up to about 15 months). Kitten recipes have smaller kibble and more protein, energy and nutrients for growth than adult food. Good options in Sri Lanka include:

How many meals a day?

2–3 months: 4 small meals a day
3–6 months: 3 meals a day
6–12 months: 2–3 meals a day

Follow the feeding guide on the pack for your kitten’s age and weight. Many owners feed dry kitten food plus one wet kitten pouch a day — the wet food adds water, which cats often do not drink enough of. Always keep fresh water available.

What not to feed a kitten

Cow’s milk
A diet of only fish (raw fish can destroy vitamin B1, and fish alone is not complete nutrition)
Onions, garlic, chocolate and grapes
Dog food — it lacks nutrients cats must get from food, such as taurine

Kittens need deworming, flea control and vaccinations — ask your vet for a schedule. Neutering is usually recommended from around 5–6 months; afterwards, move to a “sterilised” adult food when your cat turns one.
