Puppy Food in Sri Lanka: How to Choose and How Much to Feed

What a puppy eats in its first year shapes its bones, joints, teeth and immune system for life. The good news is that choosing well is simple once you know three things: your puppy’s age, its expected adult size, and how often to feed it.

Birth to 8 weeks: milk, then starter food

• 0–3 weeks: puppies need only their mother’s milk. If the mother cannot feed them, use a puppy milk replacer — never cow’s milk, which causes diarrhoea in most puppies.
• 3–8 weeks (weaning): start offering a starter food — small, soft kibble made for weaning puppies and their nursing mother, soaked in warm water into a porridge at first. Examples: Royal Canin Starter, Pedigree PRO Starter, Drools Puppy Starter and Farmina N&D Puppy Starter.
• Most puppies are fully weaned by about 8 weeks, which is also the earliest age a puppy should go to a new home.

Choose puppy food by adult size

Small, medium and large breeds grow at very different speeds, so a food made for your puppy’s adult size matters more than the brand.

• Small breeds (adult under ~10kg — Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Dachshund, Pug): tiny kibble and energy-dense food, because small puppies have small stomachs and burn energy fast. For example Royal Canin Mini Puppy.
• Medium breeds (~10–25kg — Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, most mixed breeds): a standard puppy food such as Pedigree Puppy, SmartHeart Puppy, Reflex Puppy or Drools Puppy.

These control energy and calcium so the skeleton grows steadily rather than too fast, which helps protect the hips and elbows.

How many meals a day?

• 8–12 weeks: 4 small meals a day
• 3–6 months: 3 meals a day
• 6 months onwards: 2 meals a day

Use the feeding table on the pack for your puppy’s current weight and age, and weigh it every couple of weeks — the right amount keeps changing as it grows. A healthy puppy looks slim, with a visible waist and ribs you can easily feel. Fat puppies grow into dogs with joint problems.

When to switch to adult food

• Small breeds: around 10–12 months
• Medium breeds: around 12 months
• Large breeds: around 15–18 months; giant breeds up to 24 months
